Buyers Guide for Trampolines
Q. Round or Square?
A. Round trampolines are most suitable for use by younger, inexperienced and fun users. They can offer a great bounce, but are designed to bounce the user toward the centre. Rectangular trampolines are suitable for older or more experienced bouncers.
Q. Spring or Elastic?
A. Elastic banded trampolines are great if you are looking for a fun trampoline at a low cost. Metal sprung trampolines are generally slightly more expensive and usually offer a higher bounce. The Springs or elastic bands are the flexible attachments between the rebounding surface and the galvanized steel frame that provide resistance and added flexibility and strength to the rebounding surface. The spring tension determines the springiness and elasticity of the rebounding surface. The greater the spring tension, the stiffer the bounce off the rebounding surface will be.
Q. How many people can use a trampoline at one time?
A. Strictly speaking one person at a time should use a trampoline. Larger round trampolines, such as the 12 and 14fts offer more control so it is perfectly safe for two or three children to jump together, especially if you have a Safety Enclosure fitted. Please remember, no matter how many users there are, you should always ensure adequate supervision and observe the weight limit guidelines.
Q. Which trampoline is best for me?
A. Consider the type of activity the trampoline will be used for and the points above. Remember that trampolines last a long time, so you should consider your Childs age and how big they will be in 5 - 10 years time! Will adults use occasionally too? Will the main user need a professional level trampoline or will it be used just for fun? Although most types of trampolines provide the benefits of building strength, stamina and coordination, the function and bouncing surface vary. If you are interested in performing aerobic exercises, a circular mini aerobic trampoline will suit your needs.
Q. Can the trampoline be left out all year?
A. Yes. Most trampolines are manufactured to live outdoors and are usually constructed from galvanised steel which shouldn't rust. Everything else is made from polypropylene or PVC materials and these are UV, rot and water proof. Covers are available to help keep the trampoline clean and perfectly dry and ready to use.
Q. How safe are trampolines?
A. Trampolines are safe to use provided the user is careful. In fact, many argue that trampolines are far safer than cycles. Children can get over excited and so should be supervised at all times, especially if more than one child is using at once. Round trampolines ensure the jumper is bounced towards the middle. Most accidents happen whilst on the trampoline, and not by falling off the edge. Thick, impact absorbent frame pads cushion tumbles, Many people choose to add a Safety Enclosure. Here are a few safety tips to remember:
- Ensure the trampoline is properly assembled in a level area with at least 10 clear feet (3 meters) on all sides. Do not use under trees, wires or other obstructions above the bouncing area. The area directly below the bouncing surface must be kept clear at all times.
- Perform the 'Stop Bounce' after every skill or sequence of skills, or whenever you deviate from the centre of the trampoline.
- Never jump off at trampoline, always climb off.
- Keep your bouncing low and under control. Consistently aim to land in the centre of the trampoline.
- Do not leave young or groups of children unsupervised on the trampoline.
- Avoid bouncing for long periods of time and do not bounce when you are tired.
- Do not use the trampoline when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Master the basics before attempting ambitious somersaults.
- Do not attempt back flips (back somersaults), multiple somersaults or twisting somersaults unless you are skilled and experienced.
- Read the manufacturers own usage and safety recommendations.
Q. Can I dig pit for the trampoline?
A. Yes you can dig a pit for the trampoline so it is at ground level. If you plan to do this, make sure the pit it is well drained and allow ventilation into the pit so that the air can rush in and out when the trampoline is in use.
Q. Is there a weight limit?
A. Yes, check for the maximum user weight on your chosen trampoline. The springs, frame and bouncing surface can only withstand a certain amount of force indicated by the maximum user weight. A force applied above the maximum user weight can cause fatigue and failure of several Trampoline parts. Exceeding the maximum user weight can also cause 'bottoming out' while bouncing, meaning that you hit the ground before reaching the lowest point of your bounce. If you intent to allow more than one child to bounce together, remember to total up their weight.
Q. Is there an age recommendation?
A. The safety of the user is of utmost importance, so it is important to abide by the age recommendation stated by the manufacturer. As a guide, children under 6 years of age may not have the motor skills required to safely and comfortably use a large trampoline.
Q. How much space will I need?
A. Note the trampolines frame diameter to ensure you have sufficient space in your backyard or outdoor area for the Trampoline. It is recommended that you place the trampoline at a safe distance from fences or trees that might cause additional injury if the user accidentally bounces uncontrollably off the trampoline.
