Ultimate Kids Guides to Life Science
Life science is the study of all living organisms. The word living organism includes all the microbes, plants, bugs, and animals all around the world. Living organisms can be found in your backyard, in the depths of the rain forest, the Florida swamps, and even in the desert. Learning about the different types of organisms can be fun and educational with the interactive webquests, living games, and the activities that will put you right in the life of unique and interesting organisms.
How Can You Tell What is Living?
Organization
All living things (organisms) are organized. This means they are specially designed to perform different life functions. The smallest level of organization of living things is a cell. Cells are the smallest unit of life.
Reproduction
All organisms have the ability to reproduce. Organisms produce new organisms that are similar to them.Without reproduction organisms would be extent. It is a fundamental aspect to all progression of living organisms.
Adjust to Surroundings
All organisms have the ability to adjust (change) to their surroundings. An example of this is that organisms respond to stimuli. For example, if a flea made a dog's nose itch (the stimulus), the dog would scratch its nose (response to stimulus). Adjusting to surroundings can be a life savor for many organisms, such as the color changing lizard, frog, or sea creatures.
Growth and Development
Most organisms grow. When they grow, they go through changes known as development. This growth can be identical in physical traits, but distinguishable in chemistry. This is why twins can look identical, but have different brain chemistry.
Energy, water and minerals
All organisms need these items to function. If they do not get any of these, the organisms die. All organisms need some form of energy to survive. Some organisms don’t need that much water such as, jade plants, or those drought cactus plants.
About Some Living Things
Bacteria
Bacteria comes in many types. They are very small, but live in large groups. Bacteria can be found in oceans, mountaintops, and in the stomach of organisms. They can cause illness, but also play an essential healthy role in the ecosystem.
Fungus
There is nearly 100,000 species of fungi. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Fungus reuses elements such as nitrogen, helping the ecosystem. They can also be poisonous and contaminate foods and cause respiratory illness in organisms.
Plants
This living organism thrives indoors or outdoors. There are over 120,00 species. Plants are one of the longest living organisms. Plants are an essential part of life. They capture energy and this provides sources that produce food.
